Chemical Interactions Workshop
Location: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, CA
Presenters: FOSS Staff in collaboration with staff from Lawrence Berkeley National Labs
The workshop is designed for curriculum coordinators, FOSS consultants involved in professional development of middle school teachers, and grades 7–8 teachers planning to use the Chemical Interactions Course in their classrooms. Teams from districts are encouraged to apply. We will discuss the FOSS teaching strategies, learning needs of middle-level students and teachers, and the use of science notebooks and assessment as they relate to this FOSS course. As a result of the workshop, participants will be prepared to teach the Chemical Interactions Course to other educators and to support them in their teaching. Each participant will receive a set of the teacher and student print materials.
This weeklong workshop will include:
- In-depth experience with all of the investigations in the FOSS Chemical Interactions Course for grades 7–8, presented by the developers of the course and experienced middle school FOSS teachers.
- A tour of the Lawrence Hall of Science where the FOSS Project is housed.
- Tour of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory research facilities, including the Advanced Light Source, the Molecular Foundry, and the Joint BioEnergy Institute.
- Presentations by leading researchers in chemical sciences at the Lab, including chemical physics and the dynamics of chemical reactions, electron spectroscopy, surface chemistry and catalysis, electrochemistry, and chemistry of the actinide elements and their relationship to environmental issues.
Participants can register for the institute online. Registration is limited to 22 participants.
